Libri Aristotelis legantur : The Rise of the University and the Impact of Aristotle’s Philosophy in the West

A widely held view conjures up all demons of error and evil through a perfidious combination of two main vices : the “Middle Ages” and “Aristotelianism”. Only a few know that during this time, universities emerged and evolved into our most common working environments. In my lecture, I would like to offer a general description of the philosophical background behind universities and emphasize the decisive role that Aristotle's philosophy played. The study of his texts is the result of a long process of struggle, at the end of which the West replaced many principles of the old Christian Wisdom with a new worldview based on one main conviction: Change is a reality that instead of negating or undervaluing, we should simply accept and learn to deal with at both theoretical and social levels.
