Surrounding area

The must-sees of the wider region

Celebrated for its wine and its gastronomy, the setting of the city of Bordeaux is truly exceptional, lying at the meeting point of three territories. The surrounding vineyards have received international acclaim, and are a major attraction for wine tourism.

If you like the sea, then the Bay of Arcachon , the Dune of Pila, the citadel of Blaye, and the Cordouan lighthouse situated at the opening of the Gironde estuary, are all waiting for you at under an hour's drive away. Don’t forget Biarritz and the Basque country, the playground of choice for local surfers!

Other gems on the Atlantic coast include Ré Island and the coastal city of La Rochelle. The town of Cognac provides a good excuse to discover the neighbouring department of Charente.

Just a stone's throw away from Bordeaux is the Périgord, a department offering some 400,000 years of history, as well as Sarlat, Lascaux, and some of the most beautiful villages in France, which are all waiting to be discovered. Let yourself be transported back in time, to when the Neanderthal and the Cro-Magnon man first met.
