Bordeaux, a Fantastic Place to Live

Bordeaux is a fantastic place to live, with countless cultural venues across the wider metropolitan area offering concerts and performances of the highest quality. The city is just three hours from Paris by TGV and lies at the heart of the stunning Aquitaine region, with its celebrated vineyards and pine forests, ocean coastline and lofty mountains.

Since June 2007, the city of Bordeaux has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition of the unity of its exceptional urban heritage. In 2014, Bordeaux was ranked Top 5 in the list of the “Best French cities for University Study” (source: letudiant.fr).

In 2015, the city was awarded the title of “European Best Destination 2015*”, faced with competition from other capitals that included London, Rome, Amsterdam, Brussels and Berlin.

*European Best Destination (EBD) is a European body based in Brussels. Since 2009, they have aimed to promote and develop tourism in Europe.

Bordeaux is …

  • The left banks of the River Garonne, stretching from the floating docks down to the Sainte Croix neighbourhood, which can be meandered on foot via some 4.5km of pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The historic quarter with the Grand Théâtre, and the place de la Bourse square along with its famous water mirror, which was the spectacular work of landscapist Michel Corajoud. There's also the Saint-André cathedral and the Pey-Berland tower; the Saint-Pierre neighbourhood, whose streets have a distinctly Anglo-Gascon air about them; the belfry of the Grosse Cloche and the gateway at the Porte Cailhau.
  • Eleven museums, including contemporary art exhibitions at the CAPC; the historical collection at the Musée d'Aquitaine; the fine arts collection at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts, the decorative arts collection at the Musée d'Arts Décoratifs et du Design; the natural history collection at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle; and a collection dedicated to the memory of WWII resistance at the Centre Jean Moulin.
  • The nearby vineyards and the Atlantic coast, which make the city of Bordeaux a destination of choice, and bring together heritage and culture, gastronomy and leisure.
