Program description
Each year, the University Bordeaux Montaigne launches a programme of Visiting Professors, open to researchers from non-French Universities. This program, dedicated to research and teaching, is open to all candidates whose scientific production is related to the disciplines hosted by the University Bordeaux Montaigne.
10 Visiting Professors will be fully part of the University Bordeaux Montaigne community for a period of one month in 2027. They are expected to dedicate most of their time to their ongoing research, possibly in collaboration with colleagues of the UBM. They will share their work with faculty and students of the UBM during two events, both directly related to their research project, at the beginning and at the end of their stay. They will also provide other activities addressed to the UBM community and related to their research projects, which will be defined in consultation with their UBM referee. They are also strongly encouraged to meet and exchange with UBM faculty members who work in their field, especially to consider future collaborations.

Submit your application to the Visiting Scholars Programme
Here are the steps to submit your application to the programme of Visiting Scholars at Bordeaux Montaigne University.
Visiting scholars will provide a service consisting of the following elements:
- A conference within the framework of an inaugural event which will take the form of a collective welcome at the beginning of the stay. The visiting professor will present his/her background and research project, as well as the importance of the international dimension of this project.
- A conference at the Doctoral School with the content that the guest professor will have developed during his/her stay at UBM.
- Other activities (e.g. collaborative and experimental teaching, creative interventions, field activities, masterclasses, working meetings with doctoral students, contribution to online training, etc.), which will be defined in consultation with their UBM referee.
It is expected that Visiting Scholars will be in Bordeaux for the entire period of their stay; any absence must be notified in advance to their referee and authorized by the direction of their Research Unit and the International Office. The stays will take place during the calendar year 2027, except during the vacation periods
- The visiting professor must not exceed the legal age of 67 during the period of his/her stay.
- Candidates must reside abroad and work in a non-French higher education or research institution.
- Candidates of all nationalities are eligible.
- Scientific and academic quality of the application: academic background, publications, international recognition, and disciplinary influence.
- Relevance of the project: contribution to a clearly identified research or training collaboration (past, present or future) with a research unit, a teaching team or a department within the university.
- Structural impact: expected impact on existing partnerships, the preparation of international research projects, or the joint development of training programmes (double degrees, summer schools, doctoral seminars, etc.).
- Quality of the contribution to university life: participation in seminars, lectures, conferences, or events open to the public (SAPS, scientific dissemination).
- Opening of the application process: April 13th, 2026
- Application deadline: June 30th, 2026
- Nomination: November 2026
- Possible period of stay: calendar year 2027, except holidays periods
- Detailed CV with list of publications & Short Bio (150-200 words).
- The title and a statement (800-1000 words) of the applicant’s current research project, clearly explaining how the project will benefit from a stay at UBM, as well as its links with the research themes of one or more research units. This part should additionally include up to 5 bibliographical references and 3-5 keywords.
- A scientific article or book chapter published within the last three years or in press (max. 20 pages).
- The language in which the lectures will be given.
- A letter of support written by a UBM faculty member (référent) and countersigned by the director of her/his research unit (optional but strongly recommended, maximum 2 pages). This letter should not be limited to a general opinion, but should provide information about faculty members and PhD candidates likely to be interested in the visit, the collaborations envisaged in the medium and long term, etc.
- 2-5 names of UBM professors working in the field of the applicant or on similar projects. It is not necessary to contact these colleagues before submitting the application.
- Scanned copy of ID or passport.
- A sworn statement that you are not simultaneously employed elsewhere in France (see the last page of this document).
- A certificate from the candidate’s home institution authenticating her/his academic affiliation.
- Each referee and visiting scholar will be asked to submit a summary report at the end of their stay (covering their activities, any outputs produced, and the scientific and/or educational impact (or short- or medium-term prospects)).
