This course will serve as a general introduction to the pragmatist philosophy of William James (1842-1910).  We shall begin by reading his complete series of eight lectures under the title Pragmatism, before moving on to a selection of other writings in the volume.  The aim is to give as broad a vision as possible of James's thought, from his metaphysics and epistemology to his ethics and religious thought.  We shall place particular emphasis on how Jamesian pragmatism approaches familiar philosophical problems, such as substance, personal identity, the existence of God, and free will.

Regular writing and discussion exercises will be based on specific passages or themes in the different reading assignments for the week.

  • To give students a good overview of James's philosophy as a whole, with its background in his psychology.
  • To get a clear sense of James's relation to other thinkers in the American pragmatist tradition.
  • To acquire a method of close reading of philosophical prose in English.
  • To develop discussion and writing skills in English on philosophical themes, combining both technical and everyday terms.
