Description

Philosophy and Health: from Plato to Canguilhem

In this course, mostly taught in English, we will examine throughout the history how philosophers have been thinking about their own activity through the lens of the notion of health. Health has always been an object of ambivalent attention in philosophy: it is commonly acknowledged as something desirable (something good); and yet health is sometimes thought as constituting a kind of danger, as it may divert attention from what really matters in life.

More generally, the discourse and the practice of philosophy have often been compared to those of medicine, especially when one comes to speak about the “therapeutic” virtue of philosophy. In this course, covering authors from the Antiquity to the present day, we will analyse the successive roles played by the notion of health in the general philosophical discourse.
